The link between the legend of the Presbiter Iohannes and the crusader phenomenon is often taken for granted, perhaps hastily, due to the absence of mentions in the first sur- viving sources. This article traces its origins and development, showing how it changed over time to meet the needs of Christianity projected onto the Mediterranean. The legend aimed to preserve the military achievements of the early twelfth century and broaden its horizons.
